Brilliant Device Could Completely Replace Crutches!
by: Inhabitat , 2014-08-21 21:06:14 UTC

It is astonishing that the design of crutches hasn’t changed much since they were invented about 100 years ago. Behzad Rashidi’s brilliant Sit & Stand Walking Assistant addresses this anachronism and reconfigures the crutch into a hands-free aid that uses upper body strength to support the weight of an injured leg. The design was submitted as an entry to James Dyson Foundation’s annual Dyson Award.

This App Tells You Which Battery-Sucking Apps To Delete From Your Phone

Save your battery, while you still can!
How do we identify and discard energy-inefficient apps? According to two Stanford computer scientists, the solution lies in another app. Adam Oliner and Jacob Leverich designed a program called Normal to tell you which other apps you ought to kill.

Cost of Green Roofs, Walls to Drop by 28%
by: Environmental Leader, 2014-08-21 12:03:04 UTC
The cost of building-integrated vegetation will drop from $38/square foot to $23/square foot in 2017 as the result of an increase in innovation aimed at lowering costs and reducing return time on investment, according to Lux Research. BIV technology uses green roofs and green walls to improve air quality, manage storm water and generate energy savings. […]
Looking at the Big Green Buying Picture
by: Environmental Leader, 2014-08-21 13:50:57 UTC
Earlier this month, two different studies were released, designed to capture a snapshot of the key supporters and purchasers of green products and services. One study, commissioned by SCA, the parent company of the Tork brand of away-from-home hygiene products, was conducted by the Harris Poll. The other was prepared by Shelton Group, a marketing […]
An Isolated Case: OM/ONE Is World’s First Levitating Bluetooth Speaker
by: design milk, 2014-08-20 16:00:53 UTC

Audiophiles often debate the merits of coupling or isolating speakers from their stands: the “coupling” contingency believes speakers should be conjoined with a stand, theoretically improving sound and room gain via energy transferral. Those believing in “isolation” conversely believe separating the two prevents distortion. The OM Audio OM/ONE is most visibly an isolated case.

The OM/ONE is the innovative vision of former Director of Operations, R&D and Engineering at Velodyne Acoustics, David DeVillez, a levitating driver designed to eliminate all external distortion by isolating a 3.6″ diameter speaker component from its base at a height of about 1.2″ thanks to an electromagnet. Besides its remarkable floating conversation piece presence, the OM/ONE connects wirelessly to mobile devices and computers just like any other Bluetooth 4.0 enabled audio speaker (with a range of 33 feet).

Marty McFly would likely lend his endorsement of this gravity-defying speaker design by OM Audio.
OM/ONE can be used in pairs for stereo sound, each unit capable of producing 100 decibels from a modest 3-watt amplifier for up to 15 hours of playback before the tennis ball sized speaker needs to be recharged. A black, white and slightly questionable-taste mirrored disco ball edition are available for pre-order.
Instead of wasting amplification energy pushing sound waves into a desk, bookshelf, or table, all of the OM/ONEs amplification energy is directed to the speaker driver to create full, crisp and clear sound.
