Sustainability Aspects: handryer without using heated air thus using 80% less energy and less bacteria

Airblade

For those who always thought hot-air dryers are environmental friendly because they prevent the disposal of paper tissues now there is even a better option.

The Airblade doesn’t use heated air but room temperature air with a 400 mph blast, discharged from an opening the width of a 0,3mm. Dry in just 12 seconds! The air passes through a special filter that eliminates the bacteria normally found in washrooms.

Because there is no need to heat air, the Airblade uses 80% less energy than conventional dryers it also dries 23 pairs of hands for the price of a single paper towel.. Dyson has worked with the Carbon Trust to calculate the carbon footprint of the Dyson Airblade™ hand dryer – and is committed to reducing it further by 2012.

Step by step How it works

  1. Dirty washroom air is sucked in by the Dyson digital motor.
  2. It passes through a HEPA filter, removing over 99.9% of the bacteria from the air used to dry hands.
  3. The purified air passes over the electronics, cooling them.
  4. The air then reaches the motor, which channels it up and through the machine.
  5. Air passes into the air ducts which are insulated to reduce noise.
  6. It’s then forced through two apertures – creating sheets of air travelling at 640km/h. The two sheets of air literally scrape water from hands.

Annual Operating Carbon Footprint for the different option:
69.84 kg/CO2e for the Airblade
263.14 kg/CO2e for hot air handdryers
657.00 kg/CO2e for paper towels (paper production and waste to landfill add-up!)
