vegetable ivory

Ivory palm tree nuts is a beautiful renewable material for jewelry and smaller details like button and knobs and the like. The hard inner core resembles ivory. Over its life the ivory-palm tree drops hundreds of seeds to the ground

Ivory palm tree grows in Micronesia and the harvesting and carving of it is leading to a sustainable business for the locals.

For Design for a living world Ted Mueling travelled to Micronesia and designed a collection of jewelry of which a few examples in the pictures
