Tom Dixon Invites Visitors to Design Their Own Flat Pack Lamps at Milan Design Week
by: Inhabitat , 2012-04-21 18:00:51 UTC

At this year’s Milan Design Week Tom Dixon joined forces with Digital Forming Studio to create a “Co-Design Bar” where visitors could customize and digitally print their own lamps! The exhibit emphasized the manufacturing process as much as the end product and invited visitors to use 3D computer programming applications to create one-off lighting designs. The designs will be transformed into flat-pack lamps, and within just a couple of weeks they’ll be shipped off to their new homes.

New Research Links Phthalates to Type 2 Diabetes
by: Inhabitat , 2012-04-22 19:21:55 UTC
Diabetic is doing a glucose – Image from Shutterstock
Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are used in plastics, fragrances and a variety of other consumer products. Because they serve as endocrine disruptors, phthalates have some very dangerous properties, but they’ve gone largely unregulated in the US. Now, new research shows that phthalate metabolites may increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, links phthalate metabolites to diabetes prevalence and shows that chemical exposure results in distinct markers of insulin secretion and resistance.

Italy to launch Ferrari-style high-speed train

Next time you're stuck in traffic on the highway, consider those lucky Italians. Some will get to ride in style next week when services on the slick Italo high-speed train kick off.
Operated by Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV), the Italo debuts April 28 and will connect Milan, Rome, and Naples. It's being billed as the most advanced train in Europe.
It has a top speed of 186 mph -- not the fastest in the world but still respectable. The record for fastest commercial service depends on several factors, but Shanghai's Maglev Train can run at 268 mph.

A Little Insight for Earth Day 2012
by: Jetson Green, 2012-04-22 10:22:43 UTC

*Leave a comment below through the end of Monday, April 23, 2012, to be considered for the random giveaway explained below.
I hope you’re enjoying Earth Day and doing something to better your impact on the planet. Over the years, I’ve come to realize what’s important on this site is not to criticize others for not doing this or that but to curate and share good insight as much as possible. And the insight I’m most optimistic about for the future is prefab. So I’m going to give away 10 copies of a great prefab book called Prefabulous + Sustainable by Sheri Koones.
But that’s not all. You may know Koones is hard at work on a second book about prefab called Prefabulous + Almost Off the Grid. When that comes out in about October 2012, I’ll also ship a copy of the new book to the above 10 winners of Prefabulous + Sustainable. All I ask is you keep me informed if your address changes in the mean time.
This isn’t backed by Koones or her publisher or anything like that. I just want to give something back to you in appreciation for your readership on Earth Day. And I think many of you are interested in green prefab, so let me help you fill out your bookshelf on this topic. If you want to go ahead and buy these books, here’s links to purchase on Amazon:

by Sheri Koones – $25.00.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Inhabitat Tries Out Ikea’s Solar-Powered Sunnan Lamp
by: Inhabitat , 2012-04-19 17:54:15 UTC

When Ikea came out with its SUNNAN solar-powered desk lamp, we were immediately enamored with the elegant, minimal design, but were curious about how much light the product could actually deliver when charged in an (often not-so-sunny) city apartment. So we got our hands on one of these lightweight LED lamps to test out, and were, for the most part, pleasantly surprised. Aside from costing just $19.99, the affordable desklamp is “Buy One Give One” – for every one you purchase, IKEA and UNICEF give one to a child in a refugee camp or village with no electricity. Read on for our full review!
