Create Energy Stepping
by: Yanko Design, 2010-12-20 08:02:30 UTC
This fancy little object goes by the name “Slide” and with it, you can generate energy walking up and down steps. By simply placing your hand upon the green and pushing it along the railing aside the stairs you’re walking on, you’ll generate energy! With that energy, the several arrohead-shaped LEDs in the object are lit so that you might see where you’re going in a power outage or other emergency situation!
So simple! Watch this design spread across the internet now – the most virally ready designs are the same ones that follow the Pop Art jealous critic manifesto: “I could have thought of that” “Yeah, but you didn’t!” Well played, trio of designers.
This project is a 2010 LiteOn design award winenr!

IIDA Entry Makes Fresh Water
by: Yanko Design, 2010-12-20 08:43:21 UTC
C-Water is one of those concepts that’s too good of an idea not to share. An entry in the Incheon International Design Awards, C-Water boasts water purification possibilities using a simple distillation technique. The power source? The sun. The slim, yet stackable object can float on any calm water surface. Fresh water gets collected in a separate reservoir and the whole thing is compact enough to go portable. Looks like Designboom is spreading the word too.

Phone Loves to Tan
by: Yanko Design, 2010-12-20 08:56:28 UTC
The first thing you notice about the Double phone are the solar cells across its facade. The second thing you notice is the 360º hinge. Pretty cool looking concept with the added benefit of never running out of power as long as the sun is up. Spec wise, the 3.2 inch LCD screen, touch interface and transparent panel for notifications is more than enough to keep up with the big boys in the market.
The Double is a Red Dot Concept Design winning entry.

Toshiba's Eco-Friendly Office Copier Prints Erasable Documents

A new copy machine by Toshiba hopes to be the next big thing for paper-conscious offices. It prints documents that can be erased instantly by heating the pages, and the paper can be used up to five times before needing to be recycled. The toner is heat-sensitive, and loses color when warmed up. But what happens if you leave your important documents in the hot car?...

Project FishMap Finds Restaurants, Markets That Sell Sustainable Seafood
by: fast company, 2010-12-17 15:05:02 UTC

The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch iPhone app has long been helpful to consumers searching for sustainable seafood in the grocery store and on restaurant menus. But it's still kind of a hassle to sit down at a restaurant, only to find out that they serve mostly endangered seafood. So the Monterey Bay Aquarium has decided to make things even easier with Project FishMap, a new feature on the app that maps restaurants and markets that offer sustainably sourced seafood.
There's just one catch: The feature is completely crowdsourced, relying on the app's 325,000 users to pinpoint places that sell seafood from the Seafood Watch "Best Choice" or "Good Alternative" lists. In return, users get to feel good--and they score FourSquare-like badges (such as Sardinista for reporting on sardines, Sushi Master for pinpointing worthy sushi restaurants, HomeCook for reporting from markets, and so on).
The Seafood Watch app also comes with a number of other handy features, including a sushi guide that lists fish by their Japanese names, sorting by common market names, and a list of tasty alternatives to fish found on the "Avoid" list. The app is available here.
